My very first test, 2004. When I moved to New York right at the beginning of 2002, I thought it was going to be so easy to become a successful photographer. Boy was I wrong. I interned and assisted sporadically for the next few years later and got a better understanding of how to approach a shoot professionally. The first valuable lesson I learned about being a photographer is to always expect the unexpected and always, always have a bag of alternatives (plan B, C, D and even E). A make-up artist I met during that period suggested I contacted Boss Models if I wanted to start testing models for my book. They worked with a lot of upcomers so I did that and they gave me three models to start with. I planned to do the shoot around dumbo and after rescheduling the shoot a couple of times due to conflicting schedules, we settled on a day that worked for everyone. That morning it started raining as we started to arrive on location. It got heavier and we decided to wait it out in the famous Gleason's boxing gym. Going through the outfits for the planned location, I realized the were not going to compliment the story well and I especially just didn't like the clothes. I realized they could work well in the gym setting so I managed to convince the owner to allow me to take a couple of test shots in the gym until the rain stopped. When I peeled the first couple of polaroids I was convinced immediately to shoot a gym story. The story turned out be far better than what I initially planned. Here are a few images from that day.
